The Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) in Singapore, in coordination with the Philippine Embassy conducted yesterday its Post-Arrival Orientation Seminar (PAOS) virtually for Filipino domestic workers who recently arrived in Singapore. More than 200 domestic workers deployed by POEA-accredited agencies in Singapore participated in the PAOS through the Zoom and Facebook platforms. The conduct of PAOS is a directive of Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III through his 2018 DOLE Administrative Order No. 532 requiring all POLOs to give the seminar to OFWs within one month upon arrival in their host country.

POLO started conducting PAOS virtually last year taking into consideration the need of newly-arrived domestic workers to be oriented on Singapore’s social and labor laws, customs, traditions, practices, overall law and order situation and the various Embassy services while adhering to both the Philippine and Singapore government’s health and safe distancing protocols.

Ambassador Joseph Del Mar Yap led Embassy and POLO officials in welcoming the domestic workers to Singapore and reminding them to be law-abiding residents in the city-state. Other PAOS speakers included Consul Laarni Zorayda Gandarosa, Labor Attache Saul De Vries, Assistant Labor Attache Macy Monique Maglanque, OWWA personnel Zara Zita Reyes and Lenina Saldi, ATN Officer Allan Casupanan, SSS Representative Lucille Blesilda Simbol and Pag-IBIG Representative Christian Jan Oliveros. POLO personnel Laarni Cordova and Faulyn Jane Ella moderated the PAOS proceedings.

POLO together with the Philippine Embassy also begun the once-a-month Sunday operation yesterday for OFWs. The Embassy has been conducting Sunday operations since 2018 to allow OFWs in Singapore to transact business with the Embassy and POLO at least one Sunday every month. Labor Attache De Vries said that it was the decision of Ambassador Yap to open the Embassy on a Sunday to serve those OFWs who are unable to come to the Embassy and POLO during weekdays because of their work. During the operation, POLO provided such services as contract verification, OEC issuance, OWWA membership renewal, SSS and Pag-IBIG processing of membership. -###
